Water Spirit of Paracelsus

The undine is the water elemental in Paracelsus's four-element classification. Named from the Latin 'unda' (wave), they appear as beautiful human women. The 1811 German novella 'Undine' by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué gave them literary fame — telling the tragic tale of an undine who could gain a soul through marriage to a human but would die if betrayed. This work became a Romantic European masterpiece, influencing Andersen's Little Mermaid and the opera Rusalka.

Water Spirit of Germanic/Slavic Folklore

The nix (also Nixie, Neck) is a water spirit from Germanic and Slavic folklore inhabiting rivers, lakes, and wells. Often appearing as alluring humans (typically female), they are said to lure people into the water with music and song. The Brothers Grimm recorded various nix traditions, and they inspired Andersen's Little Mermaid. Called 'Nixie' in English, 'Nixe' in German, and 'näkki' in Scandinavian, they are kindred to the Slavic rusalka.

Freshwater Nymph of Greek Mythology

Naiads are freshwater nymphs of Greek mythology, presiding over springs, rivers, and lakes. The name derives from Greek 'naein' (to flow). According to Hesiod's Theogony, three thousand naiad sisters were born to the river-god Oceanus and Tethys, each bound to a specific water source — when that source dries, the naiad fades. The most famous naiad is Castalia, mentioned in the Iliad.

Fifty Sea Nymph Sisters of Greek Mythology

The Nereids are the fifty sea nymph sisters of Greek mythology, daughters of the sea-elder Nereus and Doris. All their names are recorded in Hesiod's Theogony, each presiding over different aspects of the sea. The most famous are Thetis, mother of Achilles, and Amphitrite, wife of Poseidon. The scene in Homer's Iliad where her sisters comfort the grieving Thetis is a classical literary masterpiece. Gentle and merciful by nature, they can be merciless to those who show hubris.
